Understanding Your Swing Metrics: Head Stability Explained

The Head Stability metric in the Swing Tune-Up app measures how much your head moves during the swing, from address to backswing and downswing, expressed as a percentage of your address height. Movement is graded based on pro-level benchmarks—Excellent, Good, Okay, and Caution.

Head Stability measures how much your head moves from its initial position at address to key phases of your swing. The movement is calculated as a percentage of your address height. You can choose to display these metrics in centimeters (cm), inches (in), or percentages (%) by adjusting your preferences in Settings → My Info.

Grading Scheme

Your head movement is evaluated against tour pro data and graded as follows:

Excellent – Falls within the top 90% of tour pro data.

Good – Within 1.2x the bounds of Excellent.

Okay – Within 1.5x the bounds of Excellent.

Caution – Outside the Okay bound, indicating excessive movement.

Backswing

Tracks head movement from address to the top of the backswing (when the hand reaches its highest point).

Downswing

Tracks head movement from the top of the backswing to impact (when the club makes contact with the ball).

Example

  • If the backswing metric shows “Forward 2.4%, Downward 2.0%”, your head moved 2.4% forward of your address height and 2.0% downward during the backswing.

  • If the downswing metric shows “Backward 2.4%, Upward 1.9%”, your head moved 2.4% backward of your address height and 1.9% upward during the downswing.
