Takeaway Drill

Importance of Takeaway

The takeaway is one of the most critical parts of the golf swing—it sets the tone for everything that follows. A good takeaway helps you stay on plane, rotate properly, and generate power efficiently. On the other hand, a poor takeaway can lead to compensations later in the swing, making it harder to strike the ball consistently.

Think of it as the first domino in your swing sequence. Get it right, and you're on track for a solid shot. Get it wrong, and you'll spend the rest of the swing trying to recover.

What’s a Good Takeaway?

A proper takeaway is smooth, controlled, and efficient. Here are a few key traits:

  • Shoulder-Driven Start: The movement should start with the shoulders, not the hands or wrists.
  • Triangle Maintained: Your arms and shoulders form a triangle at setup—this shape should remain intact through the early part of the backswing.
  • Club on Plane: The clubhead should follow a natural path that stays slightly outside the hands, avoiding excessive inside or outside movement.
  • Stable Wrists: Early wrist manipulation (rolling or hinging) can cause the club to get off path or open too soon.

Good takeaways may vary slightly by swing style, but the best players all share these fundamentals to create a repeatable and efficient swing.

Takeaway Drill

Our Takeaway Drill feature is designed to help you build better habits right from the start of your swing. It runs automatically during practice sessions when the app detects multiple poor takeaways, allowing you to course-correct in real time.

You can customize when the drill activates (e.g., after 2 or 3 misfired takeaways) and how many successful reps are required to return to normal recording mode.

How it works:

  • When active, the drill focuses exclusively on your takeaway and pauses full-swing recording.
  • It gives real-time voice feedback on what needs adjustment after each attempt.
  • You’ll repeat short takeaways until you hit the configured number of good reps.

What the Drill Checks:

  • Shoulder Rotation: Ensures your shoulders initiate the takeaway, not just your hands.
  • Maintaining the Triangle: Checks that your arms maintain their structure and don’t collapse too early.
  • Club Path (Coming soon): This determines whether the club is moving too far inside (wrist roll/bow) or outside the line.
  • Wrist Path: Detects if your lead wrist is pushing forward unnaturally to mask a poor path.
  • Spine Alignment: Makes sure you’re rotating around a stable axis without excessive sway or lean.

This drill helps isolate and correct early swing flaws before they affect the rest of your motion. The goal? Build a repeatable, fundamentally sound takeaway that sets you up for better shots.
